In 1885 the arch was moved from its original location a short distance away to make way for a new road.
Originally a statue of a mounted Duke Of Wellington adorned the top of the arch, but it was removed when the arch was relocated. The bronze statue of a 4 horse chariot was placed on top of the arch in 1912.
