Originally called St Pauls Railway Bridge, it changed its name in 1937 when St Pauls railway station was renamed Blackfriars.
The bridge has green technology incorporated in the form of rainwater harvesting and solar panels for power generation. It is currently the largest solar bridge in the world. There is a pedestrian footbridge at the side of the bridge.
